A Brief Deepak Chopra Biography

Deepak Chopra is a medical doctor who has become one of the most widely respected experts in his field with his teachings of the connection between the mind and the body and the effect that this connection has on healing within the body.He was born in Delhi, India where his father was a cardiologist at the hospital in New Delhi. The elder Dr. Chopra was also a lieutenant in the British army. Deepak completed his education in New Delhi and went on to graduate from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1969.Following his graduation as a medical doctor, Deepak Chopra and his wife Rita immigrated to the United States. He completed his internship at a hospital in New Jersey and his residency in clinics and hospitals in Massachusetts and Virginia.With certifications in internal medicine and endocrinology, he is a licensed medical practitioner in Massachusetts and California. As such he is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.He has established quite a large private practice in his decades of practicing medicine in the United States. He has also taught medical courses at several universities in the country.It was in 1981 that he really went back to his roots of the traditional Indian medicine after he met an Ayurvedic doctor from New Delhi and become a spokesperson for Transcendental Meditation as a form of healing. He later broke from this movement to develop his own methods of mind-body treatment.Deepak Chopra is a co-founder of the Copra Center in La Jolla, California, which he started in 1996 along with his colleague Dr. David Simon. He moved the headquarters of this institution to Carlsbad, California in 2002 and in the same year, opened a branch in New York City.He is the author of about 50 books on the subject of mind and body health and spirituality. He has written on many topics within the realm of spirituality and medicine. His book on the practices of Ayurveda, titled "Perfect Health," is one of the most widely read books in the world on this topic.He has made appearances on television shows and is a frequent guest on Larry King Live. He also has a weekly radio segment on Sirius-XM radio and has given numerous speaking engagements all over the world. His name is one of the most recognized ones in the field of alternative medicine.He is a staunch supporter of finding alternative methods to solving the problem of global conflicts other than the use of weapons and war. He believes that if a critical mass of likeminded people would promote peaceful policies and behaviors it would eliminate the wars in the world.He calls himself a critic of the modern world's use of conventional medical practices and teaches an update course at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center, which is a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.Deepak Chopra and his wife have two children, Mallika and Gotham. He partnered with his son Gotham in 2006 to launch Virgin Comics and has written several novels and comic books for this company. One of his publications in this genre is "Ask the Kabala," which is a set of 22 cards depicting stories from the Old Testament. The Chopras also have three grandchildren.--He has established quite a large private practice in his decades of practicing medicine in the United States.
